SME Model 30/12A
The new top of the range Model 30/12 turntable was designed to allow the fitment of either the Series V or the new Series V-12 tonearm for which it was specifically designed. Based on the Model 30/2 it is a substantially enlarged turntable in size and weight and is designed to complement but not replace this model.
The new suspension system takes more isolation bands to balance the large increase in weight. This now comprises of 15 moulded `O` rings per suspension column, (compared with the 12 of the Model 30/2), these support the substantially heavier sub-chassis . This unique suspension system which utilizes a total of 60 `O` rings has no sonic footprint and gives excellent isolation.
The sub-chassis its self is 16% thicker and is extraneously damped with a space age material. Sub-chassis motion is controlled by four fluid dampers, one in each corner below the supension towers
The main chassis is 19% thicker and the same damping material is used here as well.

The matching tonearm is the new Series V-12 with a one piece magnesium tube.
Please note that new turntables will have the anthracite black finish to the platter rather than the familiar green.
Pictured below is the substantial Model 30/12A packing case weighting 79.5kg and a view of the turntable ready for removal. SME recommend removal from the case requires two people and transportation of the complete case requires ideally four people with the four handles provided.
All turntables are driven by a 3 phase, 6 pulse inductance motor with 8 pole Neodymium magnets and 3 integrated Hall position sensors.
The psu uses a high performance microcomputer optimised for motor control. The Hall position sensors provide accurate feedback to the microcontroller allowing very accurate and stable speed control. The reference oscillator is a 10mhz quartz crystal which is multiplied by 4 to produe an internal microprocessor clock speed of 40mhz.
The driver stage has CMOS buffers/Mosfet drivers with 1.2 amp peak drive capability.
The power output stage is six high power complimentary Mosfets in a 3 Phase Bridge Driver configuration.
Closed loop speed control is implemented using a sine wave commutation sequence and a proportional-plus-integral (PI) algorithm.
The on-boardl user adjustable speed variation control is incoporated into the 4 layer surface mount PCB.
